Wellsboro High School suffered its first football defeat, after winning seven and tying one, in a thrill-a-minute game with Renovo by a 28-27 score on the winner's field Saturday afternoon.

It was a case of fumbleitis and poor pass defense which led to the Hornet loss. Renovo drew first blood taking the opening kickoff on their 27-yard line and running it to the 43-yard line. The "Railroaders" scored in 9 plays with Palasky plunging over for the touchdown from two yards out.

The Hornets came right back to tie the score in quick fashion with Fred Reynolds and Pete Losinger running for good yardage. John Deibert picked up the touchdown on a double reverse from 3 yards out. Keith Tombs ran over for the extra point to knot the score 7-7. The highlight of the Hornet drive was Losinger's 39 yard run from the Renovo 42-yard line to their three-yard line.

Wellsboro then stopped the Renovo attack on the Wellsboro 26-yard line from which the Green and White scored in 14 plays. Deibert, Losinger, and Reynolds were ripping the Renovo line apart when the drive stalled on the Renovo 32-yard line. With a fourth down and nine situation, Mike Burns threw a 27-yard pass caught by John Deibert high over his head on the five-yard line. Deibert then drove to the one and Burns scored the touchdown on a quarterback sneak. Tombs kicked the extra point and Wellsboro led 14-7.

The Hornets got a break on the kickoff when Wagner was hit with a hard tackle by Deibert on the Renovo 40-yard line and fumbled. Ron Parulus recovered the loose football for Wellsboro and they were off to the races again. The Hornet backfield alternated carrying the ball to the seven yard line where Deibert scored on the double reverse to give Wellsboro a 21-7 edge as Tombs' extra point try was again successful. The half ended with Wellsboro leading 21-7.

The second half began with a sign of things to come. Wellsboro received the kickoff and Pete Losinger took the ball on the 10-yard line and tripped, downing the ball at that point. On the first play from scrimmage, Deibert fumbled and the ball rolled past nearly every player on both clubs before Freeman Smith fell on it for a gain of 15 yards and a first down on the 25-yard line. Fred Reynolds then fumbled out of bounds on the 29-yard line. Wellsboro seemed to settle down somewhat and picked up three first downs in succession to drive to the Renovo 31-yard line.

It looked like the Hornets would score on this drive but on-the next play from the 31-yard line, Reynolds got six yards but was hit hard and he fumbled on the Renovo 25-yard line where Renovo recovered.

Wellsboro held Renovo and forced them to punt. It was the only punt in the game and Keith Tombs took a fair catch on his 45-yard line. Deibert then fumbled on the next play and Polasky picked the ball up and ran it to the Wellsboro nine-yard line.

Renovo scored on the next play as Market took a lateral from quarterback Heaps and went into the end zone for the touchdown. Pickering booted the extra point and it was 21-14, Wellsboro leading.

Wellsboro took the kick and aided by a 15 yard clipping penalty had the ball on the Wellsboro 48-yard line. Reynolds ran to the Renovo 46-yard line and Losinger to the 44-yard line. Deibert went to the 39-yard line but fumbled and Renovo recovered.

It took Renovo five plays to score with Polaskey firing a pass to Wagner who went to the Wellsboro 30-yard line. Heaps then passed to Saltzman from 28 yards out for the score. Again the extra point was good and the score was tied.

Wellsboro scored with four minutes left in the game with Reynolds and Losinger doing the ball carrying. Wellsboro scored in 13 plays from their own 35-yard line. Losinger dove over from two yards out. The extra point try was blocked and Wellsboro held a 27-21 lead.

It was a hectic final four minutes with Renovo passing on every play but one and Heaps completed four out of seven in their drive. Wellsboro had Renovo with a third and 10 situation on the Renovo 38-yard line when Heaps found Polaskey open on the Wellsboro 46-yard line where he caught the ball and stepped out of bounds. Heaps then passed to Market on the Wellsboro 5-yard line.

Wellsboro stiffened their defense and it was fourth down on the five when Heaps threw to Wagner in the end zone for the tying touchdown and Pickering kicked the ball squarely through the uprights to give Renovo a 28-27 lead with 45 seconds to play.

Losinger ran the kick to the Wellsboro 40-yard line and Burns then threw a pass incomplete. On the next play Burns was thrown for a five-yard loss and then fumbled with Renovo recovering on the Wellsboro 35-yard line. Renovo simply ran out the remaining seconds and Wellsboro received their first loss of the season.
